01 Why Does Carpet Wrinkle and Ripple?
Carpet ripples when it loosens from the tack strips that hold it tight. The most common causes are poor original installation (the carpet was never power-stretched tight enough), age and heavy foot traffic that gradually relax the fibers and backing, dragging heavy furniture across the floor, and humidity changes that cause the backing to expand and contract. Once a ripple forms, foot traffic makes it worse and spreads it — which is why acting early keeps the repair simple.
